The wanderer Pacer camps near Lostholt during a time of famine striking that tribe’s territory. His wolf Skinner strays from hunting to investigate the Father Tree, and is discovered there by local wolves and elves; a meeting ensues.
A strange elf has camped for some time beneath Pacer’s tree-home. Pacer decides the time for a meeting is due, but the arrival of a sick elf delays matters somewhat.
