And so she's decided for a time to get herself out of the Weyr, in the hopes that she'll have a chance to rally back and get on with her life. Fortunately, she has had just the place to go to: Greystones Hold, home of the kin of Kassima and K'star and E'rian. K'star has been more than delighted to spend time with her in his home Hold, and while there, Mehlani has had all the eccentricity and song and lively banter she could want, along with absolutely nothing that has to do with dragons. Moreover, K'star has been the only person with whom she's interacted who is connected with the Weyr -- and Indyth's ever-loyal rider has his own reasons for cajoling Mehlani in any way he can out of her doldrums. However, vacations have to end eventually, and so Mehlani's set out on her mare Nightsong to make the trek back to Telgar Weyr. But she's not coming without some presents for the young people who did Impress, courtesy of Kassima's decidedly odd relations... ---------- Your location's current time: 17:04 on day 6, month 6, Turn 23, of the Tenth Pass. It is a summer afternoon. You walk past the lintel and into the wide living cavern. Telgar Weyr's Living Cavern(#750RJM$) Contents: R'val Sionelle K'tyn(#7313PAJOc$) Crysta N'ren Pierron Obvious exits: Lower Caverns Kitchen Bowl Looking more than a little dusty and windblown, not to mention tanner and leaner than usual, a quiet young woman in a hat slips into the lower caverns. Or at least, she'd be quiet if she weren't flocked round by seven fire lizards, all chattering at the tops of their lungs. Mehlani pauses with a lopsided half-smile near the cavern entrance, peering in and blinking to adjust her vision. Crysta retraces her steps back to her seat and sets the plate down carefully. Her fingers hover above the food for a moment before she takes hold of a wherry strip, raising it to her lips to devour it quickly. R'val sits down, klah in hand, and smiles, "So Crysta, how's Telgar treating you?" "One would almost think that you two were a pairing, the way that you fight," Kiat says almost lazily. "Or perhaps you thought I might be remotely interested in this topic?" He glares at the pair, shifting uncomfortably in his chair, a faint groan escaping is lips as he tries to get comfortable, and merely creates a cramp. "He's practiced so since ever I have known him, Sionelle. Did you not notice?" and then to N'ren. "You border on disrespect. Be careful of your tone; Ive no temper for foolishness at this time." Crysta glances up, wiping the corner of her mouth with a little cloth. "Very well thank you. I got to ride on one of the dragons today, it was my first time" she says excitedly. N'ren smirks, "'All right' is the point. I was always one of the best. My wing flew high Fall in Istan winds, which we all know are some of the most dangerous to fly in due to the lack of predictability. When I got hit first by firehead - which sent me to Benden - and then again by this..." And he indicates his own face then. "It put me out of practice. Practice, practice, practice. I've got to get back to my best or I feel like I'm not doing the best I can. And I can't work that way. It's just not in my nature." He nods at K'tyn, "Sorry, K'tyn, but I feel strongly about this. As I'm sure you aware." Flannery walks in from the bowl. Flannery has arrived. R'val grins, waving over at Flannery. Flannery nods to the assembled as she enters, settling promptly into a seat. R'val smiles, "Glad to hear it, Crysta, who gave you a ride?" Three different fire lizards swirl near Mehlani's head and then range out along the cavern; in their lead, bronze Holl bugles at the sight of K'tyn, and green Rianet and blue Enri keep close on his tail. Over by the entrance, Mehlani's still lingering, looking ill at ease, though she brightens slightly as she picks out the figure out of the Weyrleader. Flannery watches the firelizards swirling about the room, enjoying the gentle breeze created by their noisily fluttering wings. "Practice is practice," Sionelle replies neutrally, retaking her seat across from the weyrleader. "We all practice. We all have drills. In fact we all have a few more than usual now." There's just a hint of disapproval in the acting weyrleader's tone for the actual weyleader's schedule. It's an echo of a weyrlingmaster's concern for a student's lack of initiative, and it would be there no matter what the difficulty inherent in K'tyn's training regimen. No one loves training like Sionelle loves training. "And N'ren, so long as you're careful then as you say, what you do in your free time is none of my business. But if it affects your performance in the wings-- negatively I mean, instead of the way you hope it will-- then it becomes my business. Fair enough? I feel strongly about his, as I'm sure you're aware." She regards him flatly. Crysta chuckles softly. "A'ser did. We went to the hotsprings, it was nice. Hello Flannery!" she calls to her cousin. R'val grins, "What fun for you, Crysta." Aurian walks in from the bowl. Aurian has arrived. Aurian nods as she enters, Sir-ing and ma'am-ing the appropriate folk. "I beg you both to excuse me," Kiat says to N'ren and Sionelle as he stands up slowly. "I have a -wince- cramp. I need to walk." So saying, he stands, and starts to move about the cavern with an agonizing slowness. "Mehlani, and Flannery. What a pleasant surprise." Mehlani nibbles at her lower lip, peering towards K'tyn with liquid eyes; the lass shifts the sizeable bundle she's carrying slung over her shoulder, then starts as Aurian passes her on the way in. Still looking nervous, Mehlani lifts a hand, hoping to catch Aurian's eye -- and Holl and Rianet both swing over to the young woman, chittering loudly. N'ren chuckles, "As I said, I know my limits, and I know Kheveth's limits even better." Crysta grins at R'val. "It was fun, but I was a bit nervous." Flannery snaps off a little salute at Aurian, rising from her seat herself to fetch a morsel of something or other. She peruses the table, then sits down with something sweet, and a mug of klah to dip it in. At K'tyn's comment, she grins wryly. "Oh, you haven't seen me much since I got back, have you, Kiat? " Aurian grins brightly as she sees Mehlani, "Evening 'Lani N'ren glances around at Flannery's name, and waves at the greenrider. "Flan. Have you met my mentee yet?" He'd missed Aurian's salute, of course, since he was hunting for stew and 'squaring off' against Sionelle. R'val grins, "Nervous? Why?" Crysta flushes a bit. "I've never been up so high in the sky before...it was scarey." "Well," Sionelle comments, the faintest hint of a smile tugging at her lips, "So long as -he- knows them. I didn't see you two at Ista all -that- much, but if he's anything like you were when you were down there, I'd put 'self-confidence' high on his list of personality traits." She stands up as K'tyn does, and slides her chair back in, content to let N'ren head off for more sociable conversaion partners. R'val winks at Crysta, "You get used to it, given enough time." Mehlani's features crinkle in an uncertain expression, but she bobs her behatted head earnestly to K'tyn by way of greeting. Brown Munki and green Wili have claimed her shoulders, while the rest of her fair commences gossping with every other fire lizard in sight. 'Lani's expression wavers its way up into a smile at Aurian's hail, and she mouths 'I'm back' towards the young brown rider. Flannery shakes her head at N'ren, scooting a bit closer to him while attempting not to spill her klah. "No, I haven't, N'ren! Who is...oh, Aurian? Yes, I saw you out flying the other day..." she smiles warmly at Aurian, sticking her sweetroll into her mouth to free up a hand for the weyrling to shake. Crysta laughs quietly and smiles to R'val. "Well I don't plan on taking any more rides any time soon. I've got to recover from the first one." Aurian gestures to 'Lani that she'll be over in just a moment, then takes the hand Flannery offers, "Evening ma'am." She smiles. Kassima walks here from the Inner Cavern. Kassima has arrived. Pierron humphs thoughtfully as the Wingleader of Thunderbolt arrives. K'tyn pauses on his circuit of the cavern to rest just briefly before he heads for the inner caverns, quietude, and a very hot soak. "Tis good to see you, Lani," he says as he passes near the girl. "I missed you. Very much." To Flannery, he merely grins. "Tis lovely to see you, Flan. G'day to you." K'tyn nods to everyone else, a little overwhelmed at the sudden influx of people. K'tyn walks towards the inner cavern. K'tyn has left. Flannery looks up and waves cheerily to Kassi before turning her attention back on K'tyn. "Thanks, weyrleader. It's good to be back. My younglings hardly recognize me." She winks, then smiles some more as she waves... Mehlani shifts her weight from booted foot to booted foot, and nods silently to Aurian, still not approaching a seat herself. But she does sling her bundle down to rest it on the floor, and she looks up again at Kiat's words. Her gaze goes a little more liquid at the bronze rider's departure. "C'mon, Kassi--that's my last mark! Can't I have at least a sevenday to pay it back?" Yes, the age-old argument continues, with V'dan trying to wheedle more time and/or cash from Kassima. The female greenrider shoots him a 'get real' look over her head, salutes the two Weyrleaders both real and acting, waves to those she knows, and finally heads for the food with V'dan still trailing at her heels like a lost puppy. "How've you been settling in, Flan?" she asks over her shoulder. N'ren nods, "Yes. Aurian is my mentee. Of course, the last time I saw her, it was when she was dancing with A'ser." He teases the girl. "Aurian, this is Flannery, Tyrrath's rider. Flannery, as you said, you've seen Aurian and Kvasith flying." Flannery chuckles at Kassima's predicament, a hint of nervousness tinging her voice. "Ah, we've been doing well. The boys are now telling me they liked the dormitory better than my weyr..." She rolls her eyes, taking a sip of her klah, then motions toward V'dan, murmuring quietly, "What's with him?" Aurian blushes furiously at N'ren of course having to bring THAT up, she sighs and then nots to Kassima, "Evening Wingleader." Flannery beams brightly at Aurian. "Well met, weyrling. What a lovely dragon you have!" Sionelle returns Kassima's salute with an absent-minded crispness as she gathers up her helmet and gloves from their chair by the door. She starts for the bowl, then thinks better of it, and redirects her steps toward the kitchen and Pierron. She slips past the hearth and disappears. Aurian smiles at the Flannery, "He is wonderful." THat seems to be one of the more frequent words out of her mouth these days. Maylia walks in from the bowl. Maylia has arrived. Pierron nods knowingly as the assistant weyrlingmaster enters. Flannery waves to Sionelle as she departs. Crysta quickly finishes her meal and deposits the plate on a tray before heading towards the lower caverns. "I'll talk with you later R'val" she says quietly with a wave. Aurian nods as she see's Maylia, "Ma'am." Crysta walks towards the inner cavern. Crysta has left. Mehlani blows out a sigh, reflexively reaching for Elsi on her shoulder, while Munki chittercroons into her ear. The rest of her fair ranges its way back to her, Holl trumpeting out a greeting to Maylia, while 'Lani herself kneels by her bundle and starts rummaging into it. Flannery smiles and nods to Maylia as she arrives, still glancing occasionally at V'dan. She is shaken from her unpleasant reverie by Aurian, whose pleasant adoration of her dragon causes the greenrider to smile. "Ah...I remember those days - and the great thing is, Aurian - they never end! You'll always think your brown feellow is just as wonderful as you think he is now." R'val stands, wandering out. R'val walks down the short tunnel and out into the bowl. R'val has left. Aurian chuckles happily, "I should hope so." She rakes her hand through her hair. Kassima grins to her Wingmate, picking up a plate of ribs and escorting both it and her glass of citron over to the Wing's table. "At least Kay and Khari don't share that preference," she quips. "Kay objects to every place she can't really run about free in equally... oh, V'dan? He's just being V'dan." The male greenrider gives her a dirty look as he seats himself at the same table. "Always after marks, y'know. Maylia, g'deve!" She lifts her mug towards the other greenrider in a sort of greeting-gesture. Maylia strides in, and from the couse she plots she's in for dinner. A nod is returned to Pierron, and another towards Aurian - only that one has a smile attached to it. "Evening, evening," She greets various folk as she walks past them, adding waves and smiles to 'Lani and Flan. N'ren settles down in a seat then, preparing to eat quickly before his drills. He sighs. And mutters. "I just don't feel awake quite yet." Flannery grins, leaning against the table with one elbow. She quirks a brow at the exchange between Kassima and the others, the sudden chill in her expression indicating that this situation holds some emotion for her. Mehlani pulls forth from her bundle a scarf. What proves to be an extremely _long_ scarf, a good seven feet in length. And in some of the most.... well, _bright_ colors on the face of Pern. Problem is, several of them clash with one another, violently. Wrapping the scarf round into a rolled ball of wool, she hesitantly approaches Aurian, a blush suffusing her features, and she murmurs to the young rider, "I brought you something, it's, um, from Greystones..." N'ren glances up then, and stares at Flannery for a moment. He lowers his voice and mutters something quietly to her. He mutters to Flannery, "... wrong?" Mehlani glances round to Maylia and gives the green rider a nervous little smile, waving reflexively to clear her shoulders of fire lizards. Elsi goes, but not Munki, who has engrossed himself in playing with the blue ribbon tied into Mehlani's short braid sticking out from underneath the brim of her road-dusty hat. Flannery is distracted by Mehlani's approach. She smiles a little as she watches the girl present her gift to Aurian. "Oh....that's very pretty, 'Lani.." Maylia waggles her hand at her mentor, roll of bread in her clutches. "Evening, Kassi!" she responds, and begins filling a bowl with wherry stew. "Mmmm, smells wonderful this evening - wherry, tubers, fingerroots..." she says, finding herself a seat. Aurian turns to grin at her friend, she blinks "You did? For me?" SHer grin birghtens into a wide smile, "'Lani, thank you!" Kassima glances at Flan curiously. "Something wrong?" she asks, catching that sudden chill. The glimpse of brilliant color from one corner of her eye draws her attention towards Mehlani, and she claps one hand over her mouth to stifle a laugh. "Oh, my," she murmurs. "Aunt Simeythria's work, I'd wager." Mehlani holds out the scarf for Aurian, and then, as Kassima chimes in, glances in that direction and bobs her head. "They're, um, dragon scarves," she murmurs. "There's more... for all the Weyrlings..." Flannery hears N'ren's murmuring and shrugs lightly, sighing. "It's nothing. Just some memories that pop into my head at inopportune moments. With that, her smile broadens artifically. She calls over to Kassima. "Nope, everything's all right!" Lowering her voice she offers, "Do you need to borrow a few marks, Kassi? I'm happy to lend..." Flannery adds, "....interest free." N'ren smirks, "A dragon-sized scarf? That's amusing. Almost as good as the dragon-sized cane I had the Istan woodcrafter make for Corineth." Aurian chuckles as she takes the scarf, her hands fingering the material lightly, "Kvasith will love it." She reaches out and hugs her friend tightly for a moment. Dust of the road aside, the windblown Mehlani silently and fiercely hugs Aurian, elicting several croons from her nearby fire lizards. Maylia's chair squeaks across the floor as she pulls it up to the table, swiveling her head to look at 'Lani's gifting to Aurian. "That's lovely, 'Lani, really." She says, an approving smile on her face. Aurian grins at N'ren, "Oh your just jealous that Kheveth won't get one." Kassima grins and shakes her head, slapping her fairly well-filled belt pouch. "Nay, nay! M'wagering's been going rather well of late, and I've enough t'keep me going for a time--until the next spate of Turndays, anyway. M'thanks for the offer, though... most generous, 'tis, if'n interest-free." Raising her voice, she calls over to Mehlani, "Scarves for all of 'em? Did m'aunt say how long she must've been knitting the things, perchance? Oh, and by the by... 'tis wonderful t'be seeing you back." Flannery grins at Maylia. "And so, how are you doing today?" She catches Mehlani's 'all of em' remark and twitters cheerily, "Oh, as long as you're making them for all the weyrlings, could I get one for Tyrrath?" Aurian grins at Mehlani, "Its good to see you again." She grins at the girl, "Is Greystones as strange as they say?" Sionelle slips back out of the kitchen, her hair slightly mussed, and her expression altogether more palatable. With an actual smile at a table full of riders, she passes through the cavern and out to the bowl. Sionelle walks down the short tunnel and out into the bowl. Sionelle has left. Mehlani's returning glance to Kassima turns abruptly vivid with gratitude, though the rest of her expression limits itself to a shy lopsided smile that looks suspiciously like the grin frequently seen on the face of Indyth's rider. At Flannery's question, a bit of the nervousness leaves her face, and she speaks up in general, "I've got something like forty of them... a few extras... I only made two myself..." Maylia returns Flannery's grin, but is distracted long enough for the greenrider to quip, "Must be, if Kassi came from there," with a wink. "Oh, I'm fine thanks. Keeping weyrlings out of trouble keeps me out of it, too. And yourself?" Flannery quirks a brow /severely/ at Sionelle, wondering what that Pierron's been cooking up in the kitchen... N'ren watches after Sionelle, and then looks back at the kitchen to see who else is looking a bit mussed. He grins evilly. Mehlani adds to Aurian, "It's very lively." Her voice is as soft and understated as it ever is, but there's a certain lightening to her eyes that suggests she's just uttered the understatement of the Turn. Aurian blinks in confusion at Sionelle, but soon returns her attention to Mehlani. Pierron steps out of the kitchen a moment later, straightening his apron before attending to his work. Aurian giggles, "I'm sure." Flannery chuckles to Maylia, "I'm doing well - baby's well, boys are well, Acana's....hrm..." she knits her brows. "Well? Acana's in love. But that's another story." Kassima watches Elle with wide eyes, then quickly brings her mug to her lips to try and stifle her laughter. "So the rumors are true," she mutters sotto voce. "Now, Maylia! The Hold proper isn't all that bad; 'tis just Da's cothold that's the true den of iniquity." N'ren shrugs, and then turns back to Flannery, "What duty you on tonight, Flan?" Flannery eyes Pierron with...mmm. Well, with an expression that suggests she's been without a weyrmate /too long/. Asrai walks in from the bowl. Asrai has arrived. Kassima gives Flannery an exceedingly odd look. It's one of those looks that says clearly, 'I am in doubt of your sanity at this time.' "Flan, are you *sure* you're all right?" Flannery shrugs to N'ren, taking another sip of her klah. "Oh, just sweeps." Maylia's facing the wrong way to see anything but the back of Sionelle once she turns to look in the direction all the others seem to be gawking in. And, to see Pierron return from the kitchen. With a quizzical look, she turns back to the others, and returns to the conversation. "In love? Oh dear - with whom, might I ask?" Just so long as it's not Pierron, but that concept's just too foreign for her to consider. Asrai makes her way in from the bowl area, giving everyone a cheerful wave. "Hello everyone, what's this about being in love?" Mehlani sinks down into a chair near Aurian, shoving her hat back on her head, enough to reveal hair that's gotten longer and a bit sunstreaked in her absence, and a face that's gotten leaner and a bit tanner, making her eyes seem even bluer. "Your dragon... is well?" she murmurs very softly to Aurian. N'ren mms, "You know, if you're interested, you could come down and fly drills with Kheveth and I over Ista Sea Hold. Coordination tests and all that." Flannery rolls her eyes, checking her hidebook. "Oh....and I'm running /errands/. she cocks a brow and rolls her eyes a bit. "The things we do to maintain weyr-hold relations..." With that, she gives a wink. "Seems I'm supposed to pick up a Bitran girl and take her to the Healer Hall. She's going to be undergoing some sort of treatment there." Flannery raises both brows in delight at N'ren's offer. "That sounds wonderful, N'ren! This trip to the Healer Hall shouldn't take long...could we go afterward?" Aurian grins widely at Mehlani and gives the answer she always gives, "Kvasith is wonderful." Sje finally gets into a seat near her friend, "You look like Greystones suited you." N'ren grins, "Oh, that's not too bad. In fact, it can be kind of fun. I was on SmithCraft duty the other day, but they didn't have anything to do. So I spent several hours just chatting with the CraftSecond and watching her interview prospective apprentices. Quite interesting, in fact." Flannery finally answers Maylia's and Asrai's inquiries, mock-whispering. "It seems my daughter has an /enormous/ crush on Jehran. Which is amusing her brothers no end..." she shakes her head and chuckles. N'ren grins, "Works for me. I have to conduct my regular drills over the plains first." Kassima flashes Flan a grin. "Just be glad I didn't assign you t'running errands with L'cher today, or else he'd be picking up the Bitran girl, all right... but 'twould probably nay be so fair for Weyr-Hold relations if'n her parents found out." She casts her eyes up towards the ceiling, and picks up a rib to nibble at it daintily. Kassima arches an eyebrow at N'ren, pausing in her rib-consumption. "A'lex has you running the Wing's drills?" 'Lani, absently scritching Munki and trying to tug his brown muzzle out of her braid, nods solemnly to Aurian. "Yes," she answers quietly, simply. "What have I missed, while I've been gone...?" Asrai seems to be in a good mood. As she passes Lani, she snags the girl's hat off, placing a kiss on the top. "Hello Lani, the streaks look great, you should show them off." Just to prove her point, Asrai keeps the hat as she heads on over to the serving table. Mehlani starts! Maylia flashes a mischevious grin at Kassi, head cocked to one side to lean against the bronze hide of one of her firelizards. "I'm sure the hold itself is fine, actually. But it's just filled with your relatives, mentor-mine, and that's enough for me to steer clear of the insanity that reigns there." Her expression is teasing, she's certainly not serious. Mehlani almost sits up, startling Munki with her motion, and calls out plaintively, "Asrai... that's mine...!" Aurian blushes furiously at something she things of that happens and then peers at N'ren for a moment, "Some uh things did happen. Flannery's mouth flies wide, she is clearly aghast. "Oh, Kassi - this lass is /twelve/, and she has a rare, probably incurable illness...If L'cher didn't behave himself, I think he'd probably be weyrless by the end of the sevenday..." N'ren shakes his head at Kassima, "No, no. Well, to a certain extent, I suppose. There are several of us on drills, and we tend to trade off coordination. I was actually discussing this with K'tyn and Sionelle not a half-hour ago. I do extra drills to get myself back in top flight form." Flannery beams at N'ren, patting the back of his hand lightly. "Wonderful! I'll meet you at the Star Stones as soon as I get back!" N'ren blinks. He looks around, back at Aurian, "Eh? What was that, Aurian?" Asrai whistles innocently as she pours herself a mug of juice. At Lani's plantive cry, the Blue rider looks over her shoulder with a wide eyed, altogether rather innocent look, "Yes?" She looks down at the hat, "Oh that, yes..I know." The motion around the usually behatted lass catches Maylia's eyes, and her brows go up, as do the corners of her mouth. Not in a laugh, but in an appreciative smile. "She's right, you know, Mehlani. It looks lovely!" Maylia looks at you for a moment. Aurian glances back at N'ren, "Um nothing sir," She seems almost relieved that Mehlani's hat was taken so she didn't have to get into the tale. Turning pink, Mehlani manages another lopsided little smile, but she nevertheless tries to also look stern as she inquires of Asrai, "May I have my hat back, please?" Holl zips over to Asrai, PEERING at the blue rider. Chirp. Asrai pauses, thinking this over for a moment. "Are you going to put it back on?" Kassima wrinkles her nose at Maylia. "Someday, mentee mine, I'll have t'be taking you down to the Sunstone t'meet m'cousin Kaliawynne--just t'prove that insanity can be a positive thing at times!" She winks, but her impish expression sobers some at Flannery's explanation. "Ah, I see. I'd thought you meant she was going to Apprentice. That's a different story entirely, a'course; even Lach isn't *that* bad. I hope the Healer Hall is able t'help her." Back to N'ren her attention turns, then, and she shrugs. "Nay a bad idea, so long as you don't strain something in the doing and put yourself out of commission. These are informal drills, then?" Mehlani blinks a few times, looking rather startled by the question. Asrai might well have asked her, 'Is your father's dragon bronze?' "Well... of course..." N'ren looks over at Aurian, "Remember what I said about calling me 'sir'?" He grins, and then turns back to Flannery, "Sounds good to me. Did the Holders tell you when to come by, or was just just supposed to be when they sent for you?" Holl flappityflapflaps, and tries to grab the hat. He stole it from K'star, he can steal it from Asrai, too! N'ren asks of Kassima, "Which? The ones over Telgar Plains, or the ones over Ista Sea Hold?" Aurian smiles and leans back in her seat, "Yes N'ren." Flannery winks at Kassi and nods. "I know. I just thought, actually, that I should fill you folks in on the situation. This poor little girl! It pains me, as a mother, to see a child that ill. I've taken her to the Healer Hall once before, two turns ago." Flannery's glance darts between N'ren and Kassi. Maylia's expression becomes more serious, as she listens to Flannery's explanation. "Poor girl," she murmurs. Asrai smiles brightly, "Then...no. You can't have it back." she looks to her shoulder, where Rose sits preening..ignoring Holl, of course...However she keeps a tight grip on the hat. "Rose darling, weren't you looking for nesting material?" The Gold chirps an affirmative and peers at the hat with an interest not before shown. Yes, that will do nicely. Rose suddenly becomes very protective of that hat, squacks at Holl and snags the hat, dissapearing *BETWEEN* Asrai looks at Lani and assume a pentative look, "Woops." Mehlani surges to her feet, crying, "But... my hat!" Asrai smiles sweetly, placing a hand on Lani's shoulder and easing her back down into her seat. "Now now, Lani. the hat will be fine. rose will take wonderful care of it. I promise." Flannery's brows knit at Mehlani's reaction. "What's wrong? Oh..." Kassima raises one shoulder slightly. "Either, though I'd assume the ones over Ista are informal." Darting a look upward at the squeaks, she makes a face at Asrai. "Asrai, the hat belongs to 'Lani, for Faranth's sake. A'course she should have it back. Kes doesn't have so many that he can replace 'em at leisure!" Her eyes travel down to Flan again. "Aye... I know what y'mean. I feel sorry for her parents, too. Do the Healers have any clue what's wrong with her?" Asrai's eyebrows raise, "Oh, so it was Kes' hat...." Flannery shrugs at Kassima's question. "well, she has trouble breathing, apparently. It's worse during the winter because of the cold, it's extremely bad in the spring, and apparently she's almost died from breathing numbweed fumes. She'll start wheezing and gasping...terrible..." she shakes her head as she says this last. Kassima affirms, eyeing the bluerider, "Aye, m'friend, and I believe 'tis of some value to the lass. Can your 'lizard bring it back?" Folding her arms on the table, she leans forward a bit to talk to Flan. "Have her parents considered sending her permanently to a warmer climate?" N'ren chuckles, "The ones over Ista Sea Hold are usually just me, so yes, they'd be informal. The ones over Telgar Plains. Those are sort of semi-informal. The reason we conduct ones with the 'leadership' changing is to compensate for the possibility of losing the wingleader and wingseconds in a Fall. The formal part is dealing with chain of command types of things, and the informal part is that the temporary chain of command changes. That way the riders learn to ride under whoever will be in field charge of the wing in the worst-case scenario." Flannery nods to Kassima. "That would be my suggestion, if I had any say. I think a desert climate like Igen or the Southern Continent might suit her well. Her father is a posted farmcrafter at Bitra, though - so it would either involve her leaving the family or the family's being split." Maylia clucks her tongue softly, her attention held by the healer-oriented discussion. She glances at Aurian to see if the weyrling is listening, too, then frowns. "Sounds like she needs a war-" and her suggestion stops as Kassi makes the same one. Half of Mehlani's fair squawks in indignation, and the rest of them converge on Asrai, circling her head and chattering scoldingly at the blue rider. Mehlani allows herself to be sat down again, but she's still actually glowering, her brows drawn together over her blue eyes. "K'star gave it to me," she murmurs huskily. Aurian is definitely listening, her fingers seem to be ticking things off on a list as she thinks. Asrai looks to Lani, figuring that the girl can in fact speak for herself. She slips into the seat next to Lani with a smile. "Now dear, would I really give your hat to Rose for nesting material?" She looks around at the fair, making a shooing motion, "That's enough from you all. Lani /is/ capable of taking care of herself." She looks back to Lani, waiting an answer to her question. Kassima inclines her head slightly. "There's value in the learning," she allows, "though I'd think that the Weyrleader would replace any Wing who'd lost all three of its leaders with a fresh one from the Weyr in any event. 'Tis nay oft that the full Weyr flies Fall. Do the Wingleader and his 'seconds oversee the latter drills?" She comments then to Flan, "'Twould think 'twould be better t'separate her from the family than t'risk her life." Flannery nods absently to Kassima, now interested in her wingleader's /other/ conversation. Mehlani's small nose crinkles, and she keeps glowering at Asrai. (She must have learned how to glower in her absence... it's certainly not an expression she used much, before.) "You didn't give it to her," she points out, "she took it." Holl wings over to claim Mehlani's shoulder, trumpeting his indignation at the favored hat being swiped. Maylia eases back in her chair, shrugging to ease tension between her shoulders. "Ah, well. No point in my worrying 'bout her, the Hall is the place for her." She murmurs to herself. Aurian watches Mehlani with a touch of amazement. Asrai chuckles at her friend, tapping her crinkled nose. "Very nice, but if you keep your face like that and someone hits you on the back, your face will freeze and you'll wear that look forever." The Wingsecond chuckles, holding out her arm just as Rose burst back from between. In her talons are not only Lani's hat, but a small bunch of wild flowers, previously wrapped with a blue ribbon. Asrai takes both and hands them to Lani, "We missed you while you were gone." Asrai notes, "The blue ribbon was Cygnith's idea, he said the leaves carried enough green already. Or Veyath would have insisted on Green." The look of relief on Mehlani's young face at the hat's return is unmistakable -- and at the sight of the flowers, all traces of annoyance melt out of the girl's expression. She just stares at the flowers, then at Asrai, her gaze turning very full. Holl bugles, flapping his wings, and then croons loud and long. Flannery rises from the table, draining her klah mug and placing it in a busbin in one smooth motion. Waving and saluting as appropriate, she announces, "Well, I'm off for my afternoon drills. See you later!" Flannery walks down the short tunnel and out into the bowl. Flannery has left. Aurian tosses a wave to Flannery as she goes. Asrai grins, being able to read the firelizard's response, as well as Lani's. "I told you I wouldn't steal your hat." She teases her friend. Kassima nods after Flan, somewhat absently since her attention's been drawn to the saga of Mehlani's hat. The appearance of the flowers causes the corners of her mouth to draw up in a grin--as does Mehlani's evident attachment to the battered accessory. "Thank you," Mehlani breathes to Asrai, settling the battered, beat-up hat back into place on her head, with all of the air of someone returning Pern to its proper orbit. She then gives forth another little lopsided smile, studying the flowers, which attract the attention of her fair as well. "They're beautiful..." Asrai chuckles, "Well, I won't stel it as long as you don't hide your face with it..." With a chuckle she reaches forward to replace the hat, a bit further back opn Lani's head so people can see her pretty eyes and the sun streaks her time away has added to her hair. "There, much better. You have a very pretty face, stop hiding it." Holl swings his nose out to nudge at Asrai's hands, not quite as convinced as 'Lani that the blue rider or her gold aren't about to abscond with his human's favorite treasure again. Pinkening anew, Mehlani mumbles, "I'm not that pretty..." N'ren nods, "Like I said, it's a case of worst-case scenario. In any case, I have to be getting to drills myself. And yes, they sometimes do. Though there's always some extra friction in those cases. The drills I'm talking about, we all work together on an 'equal' level. Experience is the only limiter then." Asrai gives the nudgin nose a brief scritch. "YEah sure...remind me to get you a mirror at the next gather, Lani. Do you really think that Kas would allow you to go around wearing his hat if you looked like a wherry? Hmm?" Kassima comments mildly, "I'm sure 'Lex realizes their worth, though, or else he'd likely disband them. An interesting concept, in any event. G'luck t'you and Kheveth in your drills." N'ren nods, "And to you and yours." N'ren heads on out. Mehlani murmurs primly, "Kes thinks I look good in it." She keeps blushing, though. N'ren walks down the short tunnel and out into the bowl. N'ren has left. Asrai nods, "See? Even if he is a bit biased, he has excellent taste." Aurian tilts her head for a moment, "Hmmmm Mehlani did you meet Kvasith?" "K'star is very kind," Mehlani allows in a sheepish murmur. Then she blinks at Aurian, taken completely aback, and slowly shakes her re-hatted head. Kassima quips to 'Lani, picking up another rib, "Kes would think you look good in aught, but you're right." V'dan snickers and starts to comment, "I bet he thinks she'd look good in nothi--hey! Kassi, quit kicking me. Your boot-toes are too sharp!" He gives her an ineffectual glare, rubbing at his leg. Aurian chuckles and points a thumb towards the tunnel out, "He's waking up if you want to." Mehlani turns immediately crimson at Kassima and V'dan's observations, smiling weakly. "He told me that," she murmurs. Asrai nods in complete agreement with V'dan. Luckily she's too far away to get kicked. "Oh Aurian, mind if I come along?" she looks at Lani and asks innocenlty, "Kas said you'd look good in nothing at all? He's got more drive then I thought." Aurian nods to Asrai, "Of course ma'am feel free." V'dan's hazel eyes bug out, and he just gawks at 'Lani from behind the wisps of chestnut hair that are, as always, drooping into his eyes. "He told you you'd look good without clothes? Didn't know he was *that* forward. Did you know he was that forward, Ka--yeow! You did it again!" Kassi just looks innocent, and perhaps a bit pleased that her aim with a kick is as good as ever. "Yes... if it's alright," Mehlani says hastily to Aurian, apparently now trying to bury the topic of how she'd look ungarbed now that she's said all she has to say on the matter. Well, alright, so she also coughs at Asrai's and V'dan's commentary, so it's obvious she heard them. Asrai stiffles a chuckle, really she does..well, she tries at least. She stands, "Well, Aurian, lets go meet this handsome brown of yours." Kassima comments wryly, "M'apologies for the comments of m'wingmate, 'Lani. 'Tis good t'have you back--and I'm certain Kes feels the same." Mehlani waves a few of her fire lizards over to guard her bundle, and gets to her feet again, letting Holl keep her shoulder under guard. She smiles to Kassima, though, a brief, but broad smile. Aurian stands and takes the scarf under her arm that 'Lani presented her with, "He's getting impatient. Aurian walks down the short tunnel and out into the bowl. Aurian has left. Asrai doesn't look at all sorry about her comment. she even has a very dangerously speculative look about her... [And soon, out in the Bowl...] Central Bowl(#298RL$) A stony field is the center of this great caldera, the size of which is unmatched at any other weyr--for the whole complement of all the wings at Telgar could rest comfortably within its towering cliffs. Shaped in a perfect oval, the rock walls seem perfect for keeping the usual chill winds stirring about. The ground is mostly made of pebbles and rocks, some hued the milky shades of old quartz, though there are patches where softer dirt and even trees sprout up from the ground. Southerly, the bowl opens onto the living caverns and the weyrleaders' quarters; the immense entrance to the hatching grounds lies to the northwest. Heading southwest will lead one back out into the rocky mountain ranges around Telgar's protective walls. Dragons may be seen, relaxing or fresh from feeding, to the north, as well as the soft lapping sounds of Telgar's lake touching the sandy shore. The weyrling barracks, always aflutter with activity, is to the direct west. Fall leaves cling around the edges of the bowl, and the trees near the lake are bedecked with bronze and red splendor. Some puffy white clouds skirt across the springtime sky. Asrai has arrived. Asrai follows the others, still chuckling softly to herself. Kvasith bugles drowsily and starts his lumbering gait towards Aurian. Mehlani falls into a loping stride as she keeps up with Aurian, though she draws to a hesitant halt before getting too near the young brown. Aurian reaches up as best she can and slips her arms about as much of his neck as she can, he is quite a bit larger than her. She then turns and makes the introductions, "Kvasith, this is Mehlani and the other is Asrai." She makes the indications. Kvasith leans down and wuffles at Mehlani. Kvasith then leans over to wuffle at the rider. Asrai smiles, giving the brown weyrling a good looking over. After making a complete circle around the dragon she winks at Aurian, "Very handsome, Aurian. You are doing a good job with keeping him oiled." Kvasith(#10999OVaempqs) Cool, muted brown sprinkles him, enfolding his lean body and coating his long muzzle with the speckled shade of leafy branches. Tanned brown splatters down his spine and tail, a weaving nuance of brown with a taste of purple that forms a deeper, cooler shadow. A veil of umber hues a caresses his underbelly, shrouding his body from the blistering touch of the gilt drops that slide down his wide wings, graceful and sparkling, to gently kiss the wingspars before each wing's trailing edges. Kvasith appears to be about 0 Turns, 11 months, and 2 days old and is about 17.62 meters long with a wingspan of 29.37 meters. Aurian smiles up at Kvasith, "Thank you ma'am, its amazing how much more time it takes almost daily." Mehlani grins crookedly up at the brown, and then murmurs softly to him, "Hello, Kvasith." Kvasith rumbles in amusement and then puffs some air at the odd thing on Mehlani'shead. Asrai chuckles, "Aye, there are times I thank farenth that Cygnith is more compact than even the other Blues of the weyr. Although he will always be perfect in my eyes." Mehlani blinkblinks, reaching up to secure her hat in place. Aurian chuckles and then smacks Kvasith on the snout play fully on the nose, "Hey now, she brings you a gift and you try to remove her hat? Saskia walks here from the south. Saskia has arrived. Saskia wanders over, whistling a merry tune. Then she grins and waves, "Hi there." Asrai chuckles, "See Lani, /everyone/ wants to see more of your face." She smiles, waving at the newcomer. Saskia rushes over to Mehlani and gives her a hug, "Lani!" Aurian unrolls the gift spreading the lot of multi colored fabric,. Kvasith leans his head down at Aurian's indication "Don't do that," Mehlani murmurs up to the dragon. She then starts, losing her grip on her hat, as Saskia hugs her seemingly out of nowhere. Somehow, the hat manages to stay on her head neverthless, and she moves round to hug the other girl, grinning softly now. Saskia smiles, "Hi Asrai. Yeah, it's definitely good to see Mehlani out and about again." Kvasith rumbles curiously as Aurian drapes the fabric about his neck, "Well we can't wear it during drills but you will catch eyes at the gathers." Asrai continues to chuckle softly. "Hello Saskia, and yes..I think the vote is unanimous on that account." Aurian ties a loose bow in the scarf about his neck and pulls back to admire the effect. Kvasith rumbles in amusement. "Well, more like 'back and about,'" Mehlani murmurs, straightening her hat. Saskia smiles, "ooh, Aurian that's a cool piece of fabric. Where'd you get it?" Aurian tilts her head towards Mehlani, "She gave it to Kvasith." Asrai nods as she watches the bestowing of the gift. "Lovely, it will turn many an eye. All the greens will be keeping an eye on this one. Except Veyath of course.." Her voice drops into a teasing lilt. Saskia peers at Mehlani, "You give him a scarf?" She looks at Kvasith and bursts into giglges, "That's so cute!" Kvasith for once in his life mimics a certain green and preens. Saskia grins at Kvasith, "Yes, very nice. Soon all the dragons will want one." Neliea comes out of the weyrling barracks. Neliea has arrived. Asrai looks ot the others, "PErhaps we should let the new lifemates enjoy this moment alone. Ah, hello Neliea." Mehlani murmurs sheepishly, "I've brought about forty of them from Greystones..." Neliea makes her way from the barracks, saluting once she sees a rider. "Evening, Asrai." She smiles at Saskia and Mehlani adding a, "Hello." Saskia smiles, "Hey Neliea."then grins at Asrai, "I think they're lost in their own little world now. I guess that scarf gave Kvasith a lot to talk about." Saskia laughs, "40! Are you going to supply the entire weyrling class then, 'Lani?" Asrai looks over at Lani, "40? My goodness, Lani. Did you have any marks left?" She smiles and nods to Saskia, "Yes, I think you're right." "Well, Kassima's Aunt made them, she said I should bring them, so the dragons won't get cold, you see," Mehlani mumbles. Neliea looks between Saskia and Melani, with a completly confused expression on her face. Saskia laughs harder, "Kassi's aunt? I might have know it was a relative of hers. They're all loony. Did she knit them booties too?" Mehlani says, entirely straight-facedly, "I think she's going to do that next Turn." Saskia grins at Neliea and indicates the scarf tied around Kvasith's neck, "Lani's going to give one to all the weyrlings." Asrai just shakes her head. "Just as long as they don't come in those gosh awfull colors she normally picks." That scarf is awfully impressive, if you can call a seven-foot scarf knitted from enough bright, vibrant, clashing colors to make your eyes ache impressive. Mehlani mumbles sheepishly, "They're all like that..." Saskia giggles and giggles, "Oh my! Well maybe they'll scare the Thread away." Neliea looks up at Kvasith and back to Saskia, still looking surprised. "Really," she asks before nodding to Mehlani. "If it's colorful, Xylath's going to like it too." Asrai nods "I'd say they were a big hit, Lani." Mehlani turns to Neliea, and offers the girl a shy smile. "I think K'star has the box of them up in his weyr," she murmurs, "but I'll be getting him to put them in the Barracks as soon as he's back..." Saskia grins at Neliea, "Ahh that scarf qualifies as a shiny thing, does it? Well, it's certainly cheered me up." Asrai glances over at Lani, waggling her eyebrows, "Up in K'star's weyr, eh?" Neliea chuckles at Saskia, nodding quickly. "Remember, shiny /and/ colorful, Saskia. And that's okay Lani. Xylath's amused with Treena's barette for now." She explains, "It was a gift to him actually from her." Mehlani peers over at Asrai and explains earnestly, "He had to bring it back from Greystones. It was too big to bring with Nightsong." Asrai nods in /complete/ understanding. "Oh yes, of course." Saskia nods, "That was very sweet of Treena. That reminds me though. I should go check on the runners. See you all later." She smiles and waves to you all. Asrai raises her hand in a wave, "Seeya around Saskia." Neliea nods and waves at Saskia. "Bye, Saskia." Mehlani waves to Saskia, calling, "Nightsong is stabled... she should be alright..." Saskia nods to Mehlani and gives everyone a parting wave. Saskia opens the gate and enters the runner pasture, closing it behind her. Saskia has left. Asrai smiles, "Well, Lani..I'm glad you had a nice trip. did K'star get to spend some time with you?" Above, Veyath leaps from Veyath and Cygnith's Ledge and flies into the air. Asrai looks up into the sky, a warm smile crossing ehr features. "Ah, here comes K'nan." Mehlani turns back to Asrai, abruptly blushing, but also smiling sheepsihly. "Yes," she murmurs. Asrai looks back down at Lani, giving the girl a half hug/squeeze. "Good to hear. He's a nice boy." Asrai The young lady before you seems to be around 20 turns old, even if she does only stand at 5'. Dark hair with rich red highlights is currently shorn into a bob at her jawline, framing her pixie like face delicately. Not your clasic beauty, the most remarkable thing about her features are her large blue/violet eyes. Today Asrai wears a new looking top. The garment is composed of a fine green sisal, and its sleeves hang to wrist-level. Its fabric is somewhat clingy, and this, combined with the fact that it is indeed cut rather tight, helps to accentuate certain of the wearer's salient features quite well. The fairly-conservative neckline, however, does help to moderate the effect, though it does display slightly more of Asrai's shoulders than the average tunic. A small "D" embroidered in amethyst thread just under one cuff gives scant clue as to the maker's identity. Asrai's currently wearing her favorite wherhide pants and a wide belt. Her feet are encased in her normal riding boots. On her right shoulder is an intricate knot of black and white with a brilliant thread of blue woven in. This designates her proudly held position as Wingsecond of Telgar's ShadowFlame Wing. Occasionally you may find the wedge-shaped head of her Gold firelizard, Rose, peeking back at you from under her hair. <+detail is available> Neliea listens to the conversation off to one side, folding her arms across chest. If she's amused or even listening, there's no indication on her face. Mehlani's only answer to _that_ is to murmur in a tone of undeniable warmth, "Yes, I know..." She hugs Asrai back, and then turns to address both her and Neliea, saying softly, "If you'll excuse me.... I'd better go see if there is still room for me to sleep in the dorms.... and I need a bathing...." Asrai looks back up into the sky, "They certainly are taking there time." she glances over at Neliea, "So, how have you been doing?" She nods to Lani, "Of course...if its gotten to tight, tell me and K'nan and I will make room for you in our Weyr." Veyath backwings for a landing. Veyath has arrived. Mehlani blinkblinks at Asrai, startled and touched. She smiles a little.... then lifts a hand in greeting to K'nan and Veyath, before she slips off to check on her sleeping arrangements. [End log.]
