Log Date: 12/6/98 Log Cast: Rayek, Logger and editor Tilia, Master of the Palace Savah, Mother of Memory Ekuar, (spoofed by Rayek's player) Ktai, Rayek's lovemate Tyree, Ktai and Rayek's son Eveshka, Ktai and Rayek's daughter Assorted Sun Villagers and Wolfriders Introduction: Rayek is losing more sleep. Things have calmed down considerably over the last few turns, giving him and Ktai the chance to raise Tyree appropriately, but still at night he wanders the Palace halls like a shadow. Eveshka has confronted him before, as have Ekuar and others, and though it's been quite some turns since the time the Airwalker spent inside the Mountain, he's still ever wary of the Snake that can prowl through his dreams whenever she wishes, if she wishes. He distracts himself with raising Tyree and getting to know his newfound daughter, Eveshka, a resemblance of otherwise peacefulness descending on the Palace, until one day..... ---------- You sense in a locksend, Savah's touch is faint with distance. ** Rayek? ** You locksend to Savah, Rayek's reply comes after a moment, as if setting aside a distraction at the touch of minds. Concern clouds his sending. ** Savah? ** You sense in a locksend, Savah's golden presence shimmers in your mind. Her grief and fear cannot be hidden in the sending. ** Rayek, dear one, I must be brief. Our worst fears have come to pass. The humans have found Sorrow's End. Many have died. ** [The logger ate Rayek's reply. Needless to say, he was very distraught.] Savah locksends ** I am safe, for the moment. The humans have paused after conquering the village as far as the well. We are setting up our last defense near the wolfrider caves. But we will not be able to hold them long. My dear, the Palace is our last hope. ** You locksend ** But, I... ** The airwalker bites off the uncertainty before it can escape completely. ** I will speak to Tilia at once. ** to Savah. You sense in a locksend, Savah's mind touches yours warmly, then wavers a moment before returning at normal strength. ** I am needed. I will attempt to contact you again... later. Be careful, dear one. If the village is lost, the humans might not stop there. ** You locksend to Savah, Rayek swallows, feeling sick to his stomach. ** I... will, Mother of Memory. As should you, please... High Ones be with you. I -- We will come as swiftly as we can. ** You sense in a locksend, Savah sends acknowledgement, then the contact his broken as her attention turns elsewhere. [The Airwalker allows himself a few moments to turn these events over in his head, feeling his stomach tighten and contort, then suddenly starts to fly, lifting himself off the ground and dashing in the direction of the Palace, his mind reaching out as well.] You locksend to Tilia, Rayek's voice is strained thin with frantic worry and urgency. ** Tilia! ** You sense in a locksend, Tilia sends back patiently, as though interrupted, ** What. ** You locksend to Tilia, Rayek doesn't seem to pause at all, barreling along with uncharacteristic hurry. There's the sense of coming closer, his sending growing somewhat louder as he closes the physical distance between you and he. He blurts: ** Sorrow's End - it has been attacked by humans! We have to bring the Palace there now! ** You sense in a locksend, Tilia uses quite the same sort of tone. ** Why. ** You locksend to Tilia, Rayek stops briefly, caught off-guard. It is enough for the airwalker to regain some sense of coherency again. ** It is their only means of escape, Tilia! They have fended off the humans for now, but Savah does not know for how long and there is no other way for them to get away. ** You sense in a locksend, Tilia sends pointedly, but not cruelly, ** Everyone dies. ** You locksend to Tilia, Rayek's jaw tightens. ** Not all at once! Tilia, if we can help them, then we have to - the Palace can save them! ** You sense in a locksend, Tilia again sends, without hurry, ** And then what. ** You locksend to Tilia, Rayek is right outside the scroll chamber now, alighting on the stone floor with a shimmer of magic. His sending tightens further, worry bleeding away to frustration. ** I don't know! But we can't stand by and do /nothing/! ** Tilia locksends ** We can. ** There is a pause, and she sends with a slight shot of nastiness, ** Why do you care. ** You locksend to Tilia, Rayek bristles. ** Why shouldn't I? ** You sense in a locksend, Tilia is silent for a time, then sends, ** Alright. ** [Tilia and Rayek link with the Palace, bringing it once again to flight after many years' rest. No warning is given to the other Palace residents as the pair guide it across the desert in a moment's time. Sorrow's End shimmers into view above the Sun Village and gently descends in front of the Wolfrider caves.] Savah walks in from the crossroads, to the east. Savah has arrived. Rainor walks in from the crossroads, to the east. Rainor has arrived. The surviving Sunfolk are all running for the Palace, though they stop short of it to regard it with utter awe. Waiting, perhaps... It is only a while after the main group of the villagers has arrived that Savah herself approaches, reluctantly urged on by Ahdri and a handful of others. Rainor leads several younger villagers this way. The Palace comes to rest ridiculously gently considering its size, a cloud of dust rising around its edges. At first it only sits there, then a Gliderlike figure appears in the doorway. Rayek hurries down the steps, flanked by Ekuar and a few other Palace inhabitants, many of them instantly stepping forward to help usher villagers inside. Savah speaks softly to the nearest villagers. Shortly, the sunfolk and wolfriders enter the Palace with what little of their belongings they can carry. Savah herself goes to meet Rayek, Ahdri following her. A cub asks one of the ushering elves as he is lead inside "couldn't you just land the palace on the humans instead?" Rayek's golden eyes flicker over the crowd, then settle upon Savah and her handmaiden as the two approaches. The airwalker hurries forward to meet them halfway. "I apologize, Mother of Memory," he hurries, his brow creased. "We came as quickly as we could." Savah's smile is a faint shadow of its normal warm self, but it nonetheless shows her relief and gratitude. "You came in time, dear one. The humans had not yet started what would certainly have been their final attack." She adds, sadly. "They were too many, and we had too little warning. No-one could have prevented the first deaths. Not even you." A frown appears on the airwalker's lips, but before he can say anything to the contrary, Ekuar steps in. The rockshaper's expression seems very similar to Savah's: faded, concerned, but nonetheless a smile. "Eh, hurry along, younglings, in we go. Pretty one, are these all that are inside the Village?" Rainor frowns as one of the children whispers to him, he turns and since he can see it from where he is goes to retrieve the beloved toy. Savah surveys the remaining sunfolk (no more than 30 of them), and sighs softly. "These are all that remain within the village. A few had gone to visit our far-away cousins before this happened. I can only hope they remain safe." Her gaze strays to the bridge of destiny, barely visible from this angle. The rockshaper seems older somehow with this news and he nods, touching Savah's arm briefly with shared sympathy, then moving past her to hurry everyone along. Ekuar touches Rainor's shoulder as he passes by the villager, nodding once to the toy that he fetched and smiling, before stepping towards the next elf. Rayek's golden eyes seem to shimmer some as he follows the Mother of Memory's gaze to the far away Bridge, then he too reaches to touch her arm, this time trying to guide her towards the palace. "Come.. We should go soon." Rainor gives the toy to the child lifting him and stepping towards the Palace.. Savah watches the distant bridge for a little while longer, then closes her eyes for a moment. When she opens them again, it is to look down at Rayek and nod slightly. "Yes. It is time to leave." She lets herself be led to the Palace, pausing briefly once more to look out over the village before finally entering it. Savah approaches the huge stone structure. Savah has left. Near the Palace, Savah has arrived. Palace(#500Jae) You see before you a tall stone structure, taller by far than any elf or human or troll. There is something odd about its appearance -- it almost seems to blend in with its surroundings, at least if you are not close to it. But the closer you get, the more it seems to *tug* at you, and show to you its battered towers and spires. The nearest wall sports a long, winding ripple that might once have been a mighty crack, and the nearest visible entryway, a doorway at least as tall as two elves, sports a pair of heavy, ornate doors. Contents: Savah Obvious exits: Doorway You approach the huge battered stone structure. Some distance away, Rainor has left. Rainor approaches the huge stone structure. Rainor has arrived. Savah steps through the doorway into the Palace. Savah moves away from the huge stone structure nearby. Savah has left. You step through the doorway into... Entry Hall(#8823RAF) High-ceilinged, airy, this chamber widens out from the doorway that serves as its entrance from outside to an expansive room, filled with little more than strangely ornate walls and the occasional column, rising up to the ceiling far overhead. Closer inspection of the walls reveals patterns shaped into their surfaces, sometimes of wings, or flowers, or the lithe forms of elves -- and sometimes of images that defy description. The air is full of a subliminal shimmer that plays at the edge of elfin senses, a tingle that feels welcoming even in its eldritch oddness. Among the fanciful shapings in this wide chamber can be viewed a 'black spiral' of rock resting on a low column. A long winding stairway twines its way up out of this chamber and into the upper heights of this place; you might be able to find other ways out of here, but the only other exit in immediate sight is the archway and doors that lead outside. Contents: Savah Obvious exits: Corridor Winding Stairway Doorway Rainor steps in from outside. Rainor moves away from the huge stone structure nearby. Rainor has arrived. Rainor looks around sutibly awestruck Savah stands in the middle of the grand hall, the sunfolk clustering nearby and speaking only in whispers. The Palace residents continue to assist in ushering elves inside the Palace. Rayek walks alongside Savah and Ahdri, still holding the Mother of Memory's arm, almost possessively, until they reach the center. Then he lets go and steps away "A corridor has been set aside for the villagers," he mentions to her sidelong. "It should be sufficient.." Rainor looks at you for a moment. [Rayek] Tall, graceful, but sort of gangly in a way you can't quite tell. His obsidian hair, occasionally flashing an indigo highlight or two, cascades over his shoulders and settles somewhere just above the small of his back. His eyes are slanted, almost serpentine, with long lashes framing golden-amber irises, a down-tilted nose set evenly between them. His face is finely chiseled and perhaps a little long, wisps of black hair curling slightly to frame his face, his skin a smooth, milk chocolate tone. A pair of upward sloping ears peek out from beneath his obsidian mane, elegant points on each tip. Gone are the yellowy garments of Glider-make, instead replaced with Sun Folk-woven cloth dyed simply in black and white. He wears a tunic with laces through the collar, tied loosely with the ends trailing down his front. The tunic tucks into a pair of black, formfitting leggings that, in turn, tuck into a pair of above-the-knee boots. A black cloak, deliberately cut ragged, is tied about his shoulders. The airwalker's mood could best be described as frazzled. He looks as if he's missed at least one night of sleep and his voice occasionally comes out hoarsely. Savah appeared to be listening to something far away, but focuses on Rayek again at his words. "Yes, that will be well, my dear." Savah locksends ** They are already here, I think. ** The airwalker meets Savah's gaze for a moment, their copper-gold depths revealing his sympathy and grief, even for a place he never truly felt a part of. He bows his head in a single, simple nod, then averts his eyes, folding his arms over his chest. Rainor says "Thank you Rayek." sets the cub down and gathers the others "I'm going to take them there now"" You locksend to Savah, Rayek seems stunned, but perhaps not all together surprised. He offers quietly, ** I'm.. sorry, Mother of Memory. ** Savah says softly. "Yes. That is good of you, Rainor." Rainor wanders down the most-used corridor. Rainor has left. You locksend to Rainor, Rayek offers belatedly, his voice quiet. ** You are.. welcome. ** Savah locksends ** I have lost children before, but this... I must have some time to myself. And... to try to locate any who might still be hiding near the village. Will the Palace be safe for some little while, here? ** Rainor arrives out of the popular and well-lit Corridor. Rainor has arrived. Rayek looks down at the villager, blinking once in surprise, then watching him walk away, gaze lingering before returning back to Savah. Behind him, Ekuar approaches the pair, pausing beside the airwalker. "I'm, eh, going to show everyone to the corridor. I'm sorry, pretty one, truly." Rayek nods once to Ekuar then again to Savah. Aloud, he vows softly, "It will be safe. No humans will pass through that door." Savah smiles quietly to Ekuar, exchanging a silent send. Then she, too, withdraws to a quiet room to search for other survivors in her own way. Rainor says "May I look around?" As the Mother of Memory and his mentor step away, Rayek returns his attention to the crowd of elves lingering in the Entry Hall. Hearing Rainor's question, he glances towards him and bows his head in a slight nod. "Of course." Rainor makes his way up the long staircase. Rainor has left. Savah wanders down the most-used corridor. Savah has left. Tyree arrives out of the popular and well-lit Corridor. Tyree has arrived. The Entry Hall is crowded with elves, though many of them seem to be heading in the direction of the corridor or up the stairway. Rayek stands towards the center, seeming to be watching for the most part, though the airwalker calls out to a villager or two every now and again. Tyree floats out from the direction of the corridor, eyes wide at the sight of all the elves here after the place had been empty for so long. With all the flying and commotion, he'd stayed back in Rayek's Chamber, safe and sound. Finally, curiosity has drawn him out. Rainor comes down the stairs from above. Rainor has arrived. Rayek doesn't seem to notice Tyree's entrance, though the floater does earn a few weary smiles and affectionate words by the stressed villagers and wolfriders. Instead, the airwalker seems to be focusing on trying to direct an irate villager and convince him that going outside to fetch a favorite rug wouldn't be a good idea. Tyree simply blinks a lot, a bit on the overwhelmed side with the sheer number of elves present. Quietly, he answers with a hello here and there, knowing enough to be aware that something very bad has happened. He rises up a bit to avoid any chances of being trampled. Rainor sits on one of the steps watching the others, sighing softly. The villager finally calms down long enough to listen to Rayek, then walks off to find his family. The Gliderlike elf sighs and presses his hand to his face, brushing the hair out of his eyes, then moves forward again, looking around. A couple more villagers stray in from the outside and the airwalker busies himself with directing them towards the corridor. Tyree looks around at all the strange faces, wondering where mother is, or perhaps Rayek. Ah..over there. But he looks too busy to be bothered. So, he floats about a little more, trying to stay out of anyone's way. Rainor waves a greeting to Tyree Rayek finishes with those villagers and starts wandering around himself, feeling a tad aimless. Through the corner of his eyes he catches one of the villagers waving and he looks to see who he's waving at. When his golden eyes settle upon the floater the airwalker brightens and steps forward, sending over the crowd, ** Tyree! ** Savah arrives out of the popular and well-lit Corridor. Savah has arrived. Tyree smiles thinly at Rainor and waves back, before turning upon hearing Rayek's sent greeting. Well, he won't have to go pester Rayek now. ** Dad! ** he more or less zips over towards the Airwalker. Savah returns after a while, to tell Rayek. "I can reach no others." Some of the stress smoothens away from the airwalker's face as the floater approaches, a crooked smile appearing at the name. Rayek reaches over to pluck Tyree from the air and settle him over his shoulders, then turns his head to look towards Savah. He nods slowly, sobering again, and answers awkwardly, "I... see." Savah smiles to the child, leaving the rest unsaid. "And who do we have here?" Tyree's legs rest to each side of Rayek's head, his hands reaching at the Brownskin to help hold himself steady. He sends a spot of affection to Rayek, though he easily notes that stress within. He looks Savah's way and explains, "I'm Tyree. Hi.." Rayek glances up at the floater perched on his shoulders, then back to Savah again, smiling almost sheepishly this time. "My.. My son," he adds softly. "Ktai was bearing him when we last visited the Village." Rainor blinks "Hey! I remember that. so this is him huh?" Savah's eyes sparkle with a hint of the old amusement, though she nods gravely enough. "I see. Well met, Tyree. If Rayek is your father, you too are one of my children's children." Rayek glances towards Rainor and smiles. Is that a touch of pride in the airwalker's eyes? "Yes. This is him." Rainor says "nice to meet you face to face rather then Face to stomach" Tyree isn't truly Rayek's son, but don't tell him that. Becoming all smiles, he looks between Savah and Rainor, practically beaming at the bit of attention. It sure does beat dead silence here. Then, he looks blankly at Rainor before recovering. "Nice to meet you, too." he says politely, a bit of maturity to his age. Savah smiles to the child, then moves on to speak quietly to some of the scattered sunfolk. Rayek's smile seems to broaden a bit and he looks up at Tyree, arching his eyebrows at his floater son. "Where is your mother?" Stormrunner steps in from outside. Stormrunner has arrived. "I dunno. Prob'ly trying to help everyone out, right?" Tyree answers Rayek after a moment to think. Ktai wasn't in the chambers when he woke up, at least. Could always send, though. Rayek accepts that answer with a nod and looks down again. Makes sense, he reasons and quells the urge to send for her. His gaze shifts to the entranceway as more villagers stray in from the outside. Tyree settles a hand amid Rayek's hair for added support, but not yanking or pulling like a certain Petalwing might. He looks at the top of Rayek's head and sends a question. Stormrunner shuffles in, dragging a meager pack of the few posesssions he could round up. He looks about a little frantically. **Wh..** He frowns, not seeing the face he seeks, and remembers to speak.. "Where is my mother...Marsinah?" You sense in a locksend, Tyree wonders, ** Is everything all right? <> ** Savah wanders down the most-used corridor. Savah has left. Orenth steps in from outside. Orenth moves away from the huge stone structure nearby. Orenth has arrived. [Orenth] Not as tall as some, but taller than many, this young elf surveys his area with a bright, even gaze from his thickly-lashed gray-green eyes. His skin is dusky, more so than if he merely spent time in the sun. His mop of curly black hair is cropped to just above his shoulders and falls in curled forelocks into his eyes. His features are delicate, his face triangular. He moves with a fluid grace, his muscular body fit in his youth. As he regards your gaze he absently pushes a forelock from his eyes revealing heavy, dark, almost brooding eyebrows over a straight nose. His torso to his waist is bare and well tanned. Across his ribs is a scar, possibly gotten from some wild animal. The scars are not too new, but not too old either. His upper-body is well muscled and solid. He wears a pair of shorts made from the woven fabrics of the sunfolk. The shorts are a dusky blue and a pair of sandals are on his feet. An armband of hammered gold circles his left bicep. Carrying: Stormrunner's copy of Wolf armband Leatherworking tools Stone dagger Stormrunner's cries draw the attention of some of the other villagers and some reach out to help. One of the Palace residents, Ekuar, returns just in time to hear the villager and hobbles towards him, offering the youngling a quiet smile. "Hush, hush, what's all this, hm? Who are you looking for, young one?" You locksend to Tyree, Rayek's response is sober and frankly honest. ** No, I'm afraid not, Tyree. ** Stormrunner looks composed, but worried, his brow furrowed deeply as he looks about still, a brief glance washing over Ekuar as he speaks. "My mother..Marsinah is her name. SHe was not in our rooms when I looked..." Rainor traces the patterns in the stone "this whole place is amazing." he says to himself You sense in a locksend, Tyree seems undaunted by the answer, almost expecting it. ** Will things get better, then? ** Rayek offers Tyree a sober nod and a crooked smile, then continues to watch the door as more villagers trickle in from the outside. Ekuar smiles amiably and pats the lad's shoulder with his one good hand, tilting his head some. "Don't worry then, eh? There's still some just coming in. Maybe she hasn't arrived yet." Stormrunner manages a smile for the old elf and nods. "Thank you...." Tyree smiles Ekuar's way upon seeing the old elf, in spite of the somber moods all around. Then he nods back to Rayek and hugs his head a bit. [Continued, next log...]
